The State of our Nation

I do not think I need to tell you what a dreadful state our nation is in. I really thought that we had seen our lowest ebb when Blair left office, but Cameron has brought us to a new low and it looks like things will become even worse.

Here some headings that I wrote in a booklet called ‘God’s Heart for a Dying Land’ (I did this a few years before I wrote the book of the same title).

Immorality, Gambling, Political Corruption, Lawlessness, Drunkenness, Slavery and the Occult. I think we all know that these evils are hitting our society hard, don’t we. I wrote in that booklet ‘that the morality and religion in Britain has collapsed to a degree that has never been known in any Christian country.’ However, you may be surprised to hear that I was not writing about the state of our nation in 2002, I was writing about the state of our nation in 1738. The quote was actually from Bishop Berkley who was writing at that time, and that was the time of the beginning of the ‘Great Awakening’ which was led by John Wesley and George Whitefield!

My Passions

I am now going to switch to two different but related subjects – the state of our nation and stepping out in our calling. The former is why we must be desperate for an awakening and unless people step out in their calling there will not be an awakening.

I have three passions and I have written a book on each one – they are; our nation, stepping out in your calling and revival. They are all interlinked. Years ago someone prophesied that I would write a trilogy, and as I wrote ‘Prepare for Revival’ I figured that it was the last in the trilogy, but it has only been recently that I have realised how interwoven they are. I find that when I speak on revival, I cannot but help but bring the other two subjects into the talk.

Our Heroes

I have been noticing that my ‘Hero of the Month’ is being read by many fewer people than my other posts. I find this disappointing, because I have included them for a reason. I was reminded of this reason two weeks ago when someone prophesied over me. The word was ‘The Lord has given you the responsibility to honour past generations’.  I have been trying to do this through my website www.ukwells.org over the past seven years.

It is so important for us to have heroes these days. The heroes of our culture are film stars and other personalities, whose only claim to fame is their looks. As Christians we have incredible heroes to honour and emulate. Most of my Christian life I have been motivated to press on towards the goal through reading the life stories of people like John Wesley and William Wilberforce. We can learn so much from the lives of these men and women; these heroes of the faith. I have recently moved into a new home and have put the portraits of five of our heroes in my stairwell. John Wesley, George Whitefield, Elizabeth Fry, William Booth and William Wilberforce look down on me every morning as I come downstairs to start the day. They inspire me as I set out to each day to try to extend God’s Kingdom here on earth.

These heroes have changed our nation and we need to study their lives to get an understanding of how we can do the same. It saddens me that some of the graves of these heroes are in a terrible state. We need to honour them, not forget them. I have written around forty biographies of theese men and women on www.ukwells.org. They are generally 10-15 pages long, so can be read quite quickly.

Is Bethel an Awakening?

I am often asked if what is happening in Bethel Church, Redding, California, is revival. In my opinion Bill Johnson and others at Bethel are modelling to the rest of the world what we can and should achieve, outside of an awakening. They are showing us how to move in a revivalist anointing, or as I prefer to say, as a Fire Igniter. We should all be demonstrating the love and power of God in our communities like they do. We should all be laying hands on the sick and seeing them healed; many of us should be out there Treasure Hunting or giving words of destiny to the unsaved in our area. We do not need an awakening to see God do incredible things through us, but in an awakening everything will be so much easier and more powerful.
